7 Useful Tips for Parents

Cómo elegir el mejor cuidado infantil
7 consejos para padres

By The Child Care Council of Westchester

To optimize brain growth, health, and happiness – as well as your peace of mind – you want to make sure your child is safe, loved, and learning while in the hands of a child care provider. There’s a lot to consider, so here’s a guide to help you make the best choice for your family.

#1 Start looking early
Visit possible child care locations at least three months in advance of when you need care. For summer camp, start looking in January.

#2 Understand your options
We recommend that parents choose one of the four child care settings regulated by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS):
Child Care Centers – for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years of age in a non-residential setting
Family Child Care – for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years of age, in a residential setting
Group Family Child Care – similar to family child care; more children may be enrolled when an additional caregiver is present
School Age Programs – for children 5 to 12 years old during out-of-school hours
If you’d like to learn more, visit the Child Care Council’s website at www.childcarewestchester.org/services/parents/types-of-care.

#3 Determine your practical needs first
This will help you develop an initial list of child care providers that meet your basic requirements.
What days and hours will you need coverage?
Do you prefer child care near your home or office?
Do you need child care near public transportation?
Will the caregiver need to administer medication to your child(ren)?
Will you need to breastfeed on site?
How much can you afford to pay?

#4 Identify potential child care providers
The best child care provider will keep your child safe and aid their development with a wide variety of interactive and, developmentally-appropriate activities in a caring environment with good nutrition. Quality early care will have a positive impact on early literacy and math skills, academic success, college performance, career earnings, and even lifelong physical and emotional health.
Many parents ask friends or get suggestions from parenting groups on social media. We caution you to remember that one person’s judgment may only pertain to his or her personal needs and experience. So be sure to complete your own research no matter how glowing a recommendation is.
If you’d like to speak with an expert, the Council’s child care specialists can help you choose which kind of child care is best for your situation. They can also provide you with profiles of providers in your area, guide you to check whether or not a provider has any history of violations, and talk with you about ways to pay for care, including whether you qualify for a public child care subsidy.
All of our services for parents are free, and se habla Español.

#5 Make some calls
Once you’ve got a few potential child care locations, call before you visit. Check that the provider can meet your practical needs and also ask:
Is there an opening for my child?
What are the hours? What happens on holidays and vacation days?
What are the fees, and what do they include?
What is the daily program/routine?
Does the provider follow a curriculum?
What are the qualifications (education and experience) of the caregivers?
Is there much staff turnover?
How many children does the provider care for/what is the class size?
What are the ages of the children in the group?
What are the security, first aid, medication, and emergency procedures?
Is the provider accredited by a national organization?

#6 Visit the providers you are most interested in to get a feeling for each one in person.
We recommend that you visit at least three places, stay for at least 45 minutes per visit, and go at a time when children are present so you can observe how staff interact
with them.

#7 Listen to that little voice!
No, not the voice of your little one… your own instincts! There are many wonderful child care providers in Westchester County so don’t be afraid to walk away.

Here are some concerns that might alert you that something is wrong:

If the provider:
Doesn’t want you to visit or answer specific questions about the program
Seems angry, frustrated or overwhelmed by the children
Seems inattentive or uninvolved
Uses televisions, playpens, or walkers while caring for children

If the environment:
Appears dirty or unsafe
Has limited play/educational materials

Child Care Centers: 6 semanas a 12 años, entorno no residencial
Family Child Care: 6 semanas a 12 años, entorno residencial

# 4 Identificar posibles lugares

¡sino tus propios instintos!

Parece desatento o no involucrado
Utiliza televisores, corralitos o andadores mientras cuida niños
Si el ambiente:
Parece sucio o inseguro
Tiene juegos y materiales educativos limitados
