How to teach a language that is not your native language

Every day more people choose to teach their children a second or third language. However, is it possible to teach a language that is not your native language?

Angie, a mother who speaks English and knows Spanish, was concerned that her Hispanic husband would not speak in Spanish to their son, she decided to take control of the situation and start speaking Spanish to her son despite the fact that her accent is not perfect. “The experience served us both and my husband spoke to our son in Spanish again.”

Paul, born in the United States to French parents and married to an American, decided with his wife that he would speak to the children only in French and she would speak to them in English. “Our children are completely bilingual. We stuck to our goal. The kids know which language they should speak to us and we are happy with the results.”

If you are fluent in a second language, you can also teach it to your children. Though the task might be more difficult than if the language was your native language, it is not impossible.

Here are some tips:

• Plan to speak in the language you want to teach during certain days or times and stick to this plan. Be constant and do not mix the two languages at the same time.
• When the person your teaching asks you for something in English, repeat it in the language to be learned and ask them to repeat it.
• Plan games in the car. One example is saying an adjective and requesting that the other person answers with the opposite.
• Consider the option for your child’s caregiver to speak the language you want him/her to learn. This will help with vocabulary and pronunciation.
• As soon as activities return to normal, plan a visit to the library and participate in immersion activities in other languages.
• Watch videos and music in the chosen language.

What if you do not speak another language but you want your child to learn an additional language?

Speaking a second language improves cognitive flexibility, provides job opportunities, and is a unique chance to discover other cultures. These are just a few of the reasons why teaching another language is a good idea.

Cómo enseñar una lengua que no es tu lengua materna

Cada día son más las personas que optan por enseñar a sus hijos una segunda o tercera lengua. Pero enseñar una lengua que no es la lengua materna, ¿es posible?

Angie, una mamá que habla inglés y sabe español, al no conseguir que su marido hispano hablara en español a su hijo, decidió tomar riendas de la situación y comenzar a hablar español a su hijo a pesar de su no perfecto acento. “La experiencia nos sirvió a ambos y mi marido volvió a hablar a nuestro hijo en español”.

Paul, nacido en estados unidos hijo de padres franceses y casado con una norteamericana, decidió junto a su esposa que el hablaría a los niños solo en francés y ella en inglés. “Nuestros hijos son completamente bilingües, nos mantuvimos en nuestro objetivo, ellos saben en qué idioma deben hablarnos y estamos felices con los resultados”.

Si eres fluente en una segunda lengua, también puedes enseñarla a tus hijos. Aunque la tarea pudiera parecer difícil, no es imposible.

Aquí algunos puntos que puedes seguir:

• Planea hablar en la lengua que quieres enseñar determinados días y horarios y pégate a ellos. Cuida siempre de ser constante y no mezclar las dos lenguas al mismo tiempo.
• Cuando el aprendiz te pida algo en inglés, repíteselo en la lengua a aprender y pídele que lo repita.
• Planea juegos en el auto. Un ejemplo es decir un adjetivo y pedir que la otra persona responda con el adjetivo contrario.
• Considera la opción de que el cuidador de tu hijo hable la lengua que tú quieres que aprenda. Esto ayudará con el vocabulario y principalmente con la pronunciación.
• En cuanto las actividades regresen a la normalidad, visita la biblioteca y participa en actividades de inmersión en otras lenguas.
• También es de ayuda el mirar videos y escuchar música en la lengua elegida a aprender.

¿Pero qué pasa cuando en casa solo se habla inglés y se quiere incorporar otra lengua?

Hablar un segundo idioma mejora la flexibilidad cognitiva, proporciona ventajas laborales y es una oportunidad única de descubrir otras culturas. Estas son solo algunas de las razones por las que inculcar el aprendizaje de otra lengua es una buena idea.
