For many parents, the question of whether to place their child into a special education classroom can be fraught with worry, as the process of obtaining special education can be difficult and lengthy. However, when you know how the process works, obtaining special education services for your child will be neither scary nor impossible.
Special Education is defined as specialized instruction by an instructor who has been trained to provide special education services. Special education can occur in any setting in the school. Students are provided with an individualized educational plan (IEP), in which specific goals to help improve the student’s deficits are written and tracked.
The process begins when a parent writes a letter requesting that the special education office evaluate their child. Once the letter is received by the special education office, the school will ask the parent to sign a consent form authorizing the school to evaluate the child. Evaluations and the meeting to determine eligibility should occur within 60 days. There is no cost for the evaluations or the meeting. The meeting determines whether the child can be classified as a student with a disability who needs an IEP.
Federal and State Educational laws stipulate that a parent is one of the most important members at the table when deciding eligibility for special education. In fact, school districts have been sued by parents because parents were neither included nor properly informed of their rights at the table. As a member, you can ask questions and can also ask for a translator if you do not speak English.
Most importantly, special education services will not begin until the parent has signed the IEP. Helping a child succeed in school can be one of the greatest gifts. Often, a student requires assistance in order to succeed in school. Special Education is designed to help a child be as successful as possible.
Para muchos padres, la cuestión de si colocar a su hijo en un aula de educación especial puede ser preocupante, ya que el proceso de obtención puede ser difícil y prolongado. Sin embargo, una vez que se conoce el proceso, obtener estos servicios no será ni atemorizante ni imposible.

Una vez que ellos reciben la carta, la escuela pide a los padres que firmen un formulario de consentimiento que autoriza a la escuela a evaluar al niño. Las evaluaciones y la reunión para determinar la elegibilidad ocurren dentro de los 60 días y no tienen costo. La reunión determina si el niño puede ser clasificado como un estudiante con una discapacidad que necesita un IEP.

Es importante saber que los servicios de educación especial no comenzarán hasta que el padre haya firmado el IEP. Ayudar a los niños a tener éxito en la escuela puede ser el mejor regalo para ellos. A menudo, el alumno necesita ayuda para tener éxito en la escuela, y la educación especial está diseñada para ayudarlo a tener el mayor éxito posible.
