Under federal educational law, every school district is mandated to identify, locate, and evaluate any student with a suspected disability. This is known as Child Find. Child Find makes sure that a school district identifies all students who may need special education services.

WHO IS COVERED BY CHILD FIND?
All children from birth to age 21 are covered including students attending public or private schools. Child Find also covers children who move frequently, migrants, those who are homeless, and foster care kids or wards of the state.
It does not matter if the student is passing or is failing classes or if they are already receiving special education services.

DO PARENTS HAVE TO START THE CHILD FIND PROCESS?
It is federal and state law for the school district to develop a method to determine which students are not receiving special education services. Then the school district has to inform parents on how to obtain an evaluation, free of cost, and how to proceed towards a special education meeting to determine eligibility. This process does not have to be initiated by parents.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
All schools have a duty to locate, identify, and provide services to students struggling to access the curriculum.
The school district has a legal obligation to identify students who need academic or behavior assistance. However, if you have concerns about your child, you can start the process by writing a letter and asking for evaluations!
