Ballet des Amériques
Why should you travel to New York City in search of a high quality dance performance when you can experience it right here in Westchester? The Ballet des Amériques is a Port Chester based group featuring original choreographies by Carole Alexis.
The artistic and educational concept of Ballet des Amériques is to develop the tradition of classical dance for the world of the 21st century with the particular aim of developing inclusive cultural communities. “I always find myself traveling between cultures, genres and techniques, engaged in a constant dialogue,” says French-American director Carole Alexis. From a classical basis and drawing on varios influences, Carole Alexis creates works that spark our curiosity, that question and explore, yet that always give pride of place to the sheer physicality and visceral character of dance.
Ballet des Amériques was proclaimed Westchester’s premier dance company by the office of the County Executive. A regional company on the rise, Ballet des Amériques is gaining media attention in the New York City area as well as internationally. The group includes a diverse mix of nine dancers from the Philippines, Bolivia, Italy, and all over the United States.
Ballet des Amériques tours schools, libraries and community centers with its “Ballet is Not Pink” campaign of performances and invites the public to its annual in-house winter series “Evenings of Dance” at their studio (16 King Street, Port Chester) on January 26th and March 30th at 7 pm ($20). Enjoy an evening of art and cuisine in the Village of Port Chester by attending a performance at Ballet des Amériques and by making reservations for dinner after the show at one of the many restaurants in the Waterfront district.
Ballet des Amériques will also be performing the Nutcracker Dream at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck on December 16th with performances at 2pm and 5pm and Dec. 22nd at 3pm and 7pm ($20/$25). Carole Alexis’ Nutcracker Dream is inspired by the work of Marius Petipa and Rudolf Nureyev and will be presented as a one-hour family friendly adaptation of the classic ballet.
The Westchester Wednesday Dance Series features the group at Tarrytown Music Hall on February 20th, April 24th, and June 26th at 7 pm ($20/$35).
