How to change your thoughts about gaining and losing weight

By Fabián Kolonisky, Psychologist

“I cannot do it….”
“I tried a thousand times and nothing works.”
“At home we are all fat, it is my destiny.”

These are the thoughts that people with extra pounds repeat for years. Disappointment and anguish take over those who cannot beat obesity. What is the way to achieve the objective of losing weight and not gaining it again?

“I want to lose weight now, but I do not know how to start”
The first thing is to make a clear objective, something concrete. This is like when someone organizes a trip and knows what to put in the bag and where to go. If there is no destination, then there is no trip. Losing weight is not about losing pounds, but about emptying your emotional backpack because what weighs on us is directly related to what happens to us.
Always remember that problems are not a hole but a bridge.

“I have been dieting for years but every time I loose weight, I gain it back again”
The person who goes on a diet often finds that the problem is not losing weight, but gaining it back.
The results are not enduring because if the problem of “losing and gaining” weight is solved, the person must deal with the issues that truly distress them. For people dealing with chronic obesity, this “up and down” is a permanent cause of frustration that can build and build. The idea is not to fight obesity, but to “build thinness.”

“I will stop eating starting tomorrow”
The key to not gaining weight is to recognize the limits and apply them. Obesity is a disease that heals with choice and limits.
The right thing to do is not to stop eating, but to change the relationship with food.
To make personal growth on the path to eating healthy, it will involve both learning to incorporate new things and taking away bad habits.

Final Advice
The extra pounds are the CONSEQUENCE of anguish, not the CAUSE.
Begin doing something for yourself. Make A QUALITY LIFE your goal.
Change the “I should” for the “I want.”
Ask yourself if you have everything you want or if you want everything you have.
Leave the attempt to take action.
Know that to heal obesity you just have to desire it. Remember that what the mind desires becomes an order.
Be careful what you want because it will happen.

“No puedo”

“Vivo a dieta hace años y vuelvo a engordar”
