An IEP is a legal document that helps a student struggling at school to meet academic or social demands. The document is provided by a school district to those students who are not making academic progress. It is also required by Federal and State Education laws to maximize the strengths of the student and to keep them with their peers.
An IEP reflects several evaluations including psychological and academic reports, social history, and teacher input. Additional evaluations such as speech and language, occupational, physical, or assistive technology can also be conducted to determine eligibility. The IEP provides the services needed to help the student access the curriculum and master skills to meet goals. The document is valid on a year-to-year basis and is reviewed annually by parents and school staff.
Although an IEP may not provide a formal diagnosis, the information on it is based on evaluations conducted by school personnel. Probably the most important feature of an IEP is that it helps to ensure that a student has access to a curriculum based on their specific academic/social/assistive technology needs.
In other words, an individualized educational plan can help a student be successful at school. If you feel that your child is failing at school talk to their teacher and find out what next steps can be offered to help. Never be afraid to ask questions because there is a community of professionals available to support you in helping your child.
Un IEP es un documento legal que ayuda a un estudiante con dificultades en la escuela a cumplir con las demandas académicas o sociales. El documento es proporcionado por un distrito escolar a aquellos estudiantes que no están progresando académicamente. También es requerido por las leyes de educación federales y estatales para maximizar las fortalezas del estudiante y mantenerlo con sus compañeros.
Un IEP refleja varias evaluaciones que incluyen informes psicológicos y académicos, historia social y aportes del maestro. También se pueden realizar evaluaciones adicionales como el habla y el lenguaje, tecnología ocupacional, física o asistencial para determinar la elegibilidad. Probablemente la característica más importante de este es que ayuda a garantizar que un estudiante tenga acceso a un plan de estudios basado en sus necesidades académicas/sociales/tecnológicas.
En otras palabras, un plan educativo individualizado puede ayudar a un estudiante a tener éxito en la escuela. Si sientes que tu hijo está fallando en la escuela, habla con su maestro y averigua qué pasos se pueden ofrecer a continuación para ayudarlo.
